Elijah Tryon (Seal).

A. B. McClenthen, of Manilus, Onondaga Cnty., N. Y.
George Cole, of Manilus, Onondaga Cnty., N. Y.
Again quoting from Mrs. Martha Barner 10.300a: "The will of Elijah Tryon probated Oct. 29th, 1875, would make him 93 years of age if born in 1782, as some records state. It would also make it impossible for him to have married Prudence Tryon 5.19h in 1787. If the 1782 date for his birth is in error, he could not have been born much earlier as he would be too old to be alive in 1875, though the tradition among his descendants states that he lived to be 95 years and over. He probably was born much earlier and the marriage record of Prudence and Elijah Tryon is probably another Elijah Tryon. "
The following is an extract from a letter to Miss Nettie A. Tryon 8.411a by a relative, A. J. Hubbard. The exact date of the letter is not known, but it is assumed that it was written shortly before the year 1920. It has been said that as many as 200 letters were exchanged between Miss Tryon and Mr. Hubbard in an effort to straighten out genealogical matters. We quote:
"Elijah Tryon, probably the youngest child of William 4.31a and Catherine (Codner) Tryon, aged 85 years in 1868, seems to have been living somewhere near the town of Greenfield (Mass.) in 1824. Moved to Manilus, N.Y., after 1814 and died there. There may have been other children, but up to this time we have not been able to obtain their names or any information about them. Mrs. Lewis O. Shepherd, mentioned below, of Plantsville, is a daughter of Robert C. Dunham 7.261b, of Southington, Conn., who was a grandson of Harvey Dunham and Elizabeth (Tryon) Dunham 5.86e, daughter of Capt. William Tryon 4.31b. The name of Robert Dunham appeared in the list of heirs of Elijah Tryon. Mrs. Shepherd is also a descendant of Ephraim and Irene (Tryon) Hubbard 5.86b through their daughter Mary 5.156a. She states that she has the dowry chest given by Capt. William Tryon to his daughter Elizabeth 6.155f, and that he brought it back from England on one of his voyages, being a sea-faring man, and according to the tradition of the ship, a ship's captain."
"Elisha Tryon, probably born about 1776, said to have been about 90 years old about 1867, lived about Berlin or Southington. This information obtained from Mrs. Shepherd, of Plantsville, Conn., and she says she remembers him visiting her father when she was a small child. There might be an error in this and the same might be Elijah."
Here is a copy of a paper in the possession of Mrs. Ruth (Hendryx) Mosier 9.296a, of Dowagiac, Mich., supposed to have been in the possession of Elijah Tryon. It is not clear just what this is, but it is included nevertheless:

Question: Elijah or Elisha? By Martha Barner 10.300a
"Bulkeley Genealogy (an excellent genealogy), page 593, omits Elisha Tryon, who has been mentioned in every list of William Tryon and Catherine (Codner) Tryon's children that has been examined. It is probable that he is confused with Elijah Tryon and is the same person as the so mentioned Elijah, because Elijah could not have been born in 1782 and marry in 1787 as stated in Stiles' History of Wethersfield. However, there may be another Elijah Tryon born in 1782 of another Tryon line. It is possible that Elisha and Elijah mentioned are one and the same person. It also seems unlikely that Elijah was born in 1782 because if he did marry Prudence it would make him 14 years younger than his wife, which seems unlikely, but could be possible.
Concerning the person of Elijah Tryon, there seems to be no birth record for him in the Vital Statistics of Middletown. According to Bulkeley Genealogy he probably married Prudence Tryon, a cousin. There is a church record to that effect in Middletown, but information from the Connecticut State Library presents a record of Elijah Johnson being married to Prudence Tryon on the same date, May 8, 1787. They have no record of an Elijah Tryon marriage. The so-called Elijah lived to an advanced age and his will gives no mention of either wife or children. He either was not married, or possibly divorced. There seems to be a hiatus here that cannot be cleared up. It appears that Elijah Johnson and Eliljah Tryon might be the same person (see 5.19h). The origin of the name Johnson cannot be explained. Early Connecticut Marriages, as found in Ancient Church Records, by Frederic W. Bailey, vol. 6, gives a record of the marriage of one Elijah Tryon and Prudence Tryon on May 8, 1787. The Middlesex County records show no divorce for this couple."
TIMOTHY TRYON 5.86d, second son of Capt. William Tryon 4.31b and Catherine (Codner) Tryon, was born at Middletown, Conn., about 1772. Quoting Mrs. Martha Barner 10.300a: "Not much is known of him except that he came from Middletown and at some time settled in Buckland, Mass.*** The Court House at Buckland burned and most of the records with it, but a recent history of Buckland names him as a possible son of Josiah Tryon 4.52b, as he is named in the will of Josiah (no relationship given). Jacobus, in his history of the Bulkeley family and their descendants names him as a possible son of William and Catherine Codner. He married Boxanna Smith, of Farmington, Conn., at Saybrook, in April of 1793. They moved to Manilus, N.Y., in 1816, lived in Livingston County, N.Y., in 1819, and bought land there in 1822. He died at York, N.Y., Dec. 24, 1849, aged 78 years. Roxanna died June 11, 1845, aged 75 years, and they are buried in Teeds Cemetery just outside of York, in Livingston County. That he is the son of William and Catherine Codner is more likely correct. He may have been a nephew of Josiah, although there is no record of any Josiah Tryon in that connection." His marriage record was taken from early Connecticut marriages as found in Ancient Church Records prior to 1800 by Frederic W. Bailey, vol. 4, p. 10. Record of burial is from the private record of Mrs. Ruth (Hendryx) Mosier 9.296a, of Dowagiac, Mich., and verified by Teeds Cemetery in New York. Four children are found recorded. There were probably others, but their names, dates, and other
information concerning them have not been ascertained:
Eunice 6.158a,
Lemuel 6.158b,
William 6.158c,
Austin 6.158d.
ELIZABETH TRYON 5.86e, second daughter of Capt. William Tryon 4.31b and Catherine (Codner) Tryon, was born at Middletown, Conn., about 1775. She married Harvey Dunham, of Connecticut, Feb. 19, 1795. No date for his birth. He died July 15, 1836, and she died June 23, 1865, aged 90 years. Harvey Dunham was a cousin of John Dunham, who married Lucy Jane Tryon 5.86g. Much of this information is taken from Dunham Genealogy, which is found to be not too correct, as many dates conflict. The six children of Elizabeth and Harvey were:
Elizabeth Dunham 6.159a,
Truman Dunham 6.159b,
Harvey Dunham 6.159c,
Clarissa Dunham 6.159d,
Polly Dunham 6.159e,
Rebecca G. Dunham 6.159f.
ELISHA TRYON 5.86f, third son of Capt. William Tryon 4.31b and Catherine (Codner) Tryon, was born at Middletown, Conn., about 1776. He married the Widow Clark in June of 1798, and died in New York State, date not known.
LUCY JANE TRYON 5.86g, third daughter of Capt. William Tryon 4.31b and Catherine (Codner) Tryon, was born at Middletown, Conn., about 1777. She married John Dunham,
of Kensington, but date is not given. They lived in Connecticut. John was a cousin of Harvey Dunham, who married Lucy's sister Elizabeth 5.86e.
